Neutral status, path to the EU, Russian Crimea. WSJ publishes terms of the peace agreement not signed at the beginning of the war
01.03.2024 10:14Ukraine is in a “dire situation,” and the “blunder” by French President Emmanuel Macron has only worsened the situation further.
This opinion is expressed by the newspaper Politico.
According to a source in the Elysée Palace, President Macron’s words about the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine were supposed to send a signal to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin “not to do anything foolish.” However, instead, they only “exposed divisions and disagreements in the West, expressing panic about the military situation in Ukraine.”
The publication believes that Macron’s statement “stands out as a glaring misunderstanding not only among his colleagues but also among European public opinion.”
A recent survey is cited, where only 10% of surveyed Europeans stated that they believe in Ukraine’s victory, while 20% believe in Russia’s victory. 41% called for pushing Ukraine towards negotiations, while 31% advocated for providing support to Ukraine.
Politico calls on the West, including Macron, to focus on supplying weapons to Ukraine to give it a chance to win, rather than “dividing Kiev’s allies, advertising divisions and presenting the Kremlin with a propaganda gift.”
