“If you want to fight to the last, join us”: a Ukrainian soldier criticized civilians who oppose peace
December 6, 2024German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has called for coordination with neighboring countries to address a potential increase in refugee flows from war-torn and politically unstable nations.
She made the statement during an interview with Welt TV, specifying Ukraine and Syria as the focus areas.
“We need a different system for the distribution of Ukrainian refugees. We will also discuss the situation in Syria with Turkey. I believe all these measures are important and necessary, including limiting uncontrolled migration,” the minister said.
However, she did not specify exactly how the system should be changed.
According to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the majority of asylum applications in Germany are submitted by Syrians. From January to October 2024, nearly 69,000 asylum requests came from Syrian nationals. As of late August 2024, around 1.24 million Ukrainians were living in Germany, compared to fewer than 150,000 before the war began in February 2022. Unlike refugees from other countries, Ukrainians do not need to apply for asylum to stay in Germany.
Yesterday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Ukrainians in Germany to find employment or consider returning home.
Former U.S. Army Europe Commander General Ben Hodges has also weighed in, expressing that there are too many Ukrainians in Germany, calling it problematic.
“Only those who cannot help Ukraine fight should be here,” he stated.
