21.05.2026 09:53Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has demanded an official apology and security guarantees from Ukraine after a Ukrainian underwater drone was discovered near the country’s shores.
This was reported by CNN Greece.
“She [Ukraine] owes us a very big apology. And in addition to the apology, she must provide an absolute guarantee that something like this will not happen again in the wider region,” Dendias said.
According to the Greek minister, Ukraine’s ownership of the drone is entirely obvious. The Greek side claims to know the type of drone, where it was manufactured, and what tasks it was carrying out.
Dendias also raised the possibility of catastrophic consequences if the drone had collided with a civilian vessel. According to him, if a cruise liner traveling from Venice to the Eastern Mediterranean had struck the drone, it would have sunk.
“How many dead would we be mourning? And how acceptable is this in the Mediterranean?” the minister added.
A spokesperson for the Greek Foreign Ministry stated that once the official findings of the General Staff are received, the diplomatic agency will take “the necessary measures and official steps at the bilateral and international level.” According to her, no formal démarches have been made yet — bilateral talks and discussions are currently underway.
The incident with the Greek drone has become part of a broader wave of allied grievances toward Ukraine. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Kyiv must choose its targets more precisely during strikes on Russian territory, and that Ukrainian attacks on Russia must not create security threats for NATO countries. Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur also stated that Tallinn expects Ukraine to improve its control over drones following a series of airspace violations by Baltic states over recent months.
