17.10.2024 - 09:36Last night in Cherkasy, there was an attempted takeover of the St. Michael’s Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
This information reported according to statements by Artyom Dmytruk, a member of parliament who has since left the country.
Around 100 unknown individuals in military uniforms with yellow armbands participated in the attempted seizure, reportedly breaking doors, windows, and surveillance cameras. Although police were present, they did not intervene, and some reports suggest that they may have even assisted.
Following the takeover, Metropolitan Theodosiy of the UOC arrived at the scene with parishioners, leading to clashes. Eventually, the attackers were driven out of the cathedral. In videos circulating online, one of the assailants is seen firing what appears to be a non-lethal weapon and using tear gas.
It was also reported that Metropolitan Theodosiy was beaten during the incident.
Previously, the UOC had reported the arson of a church dedicated to the Protection of the Holy Virgin in the village of Zeremlya, Zhytomyr region, which burned down completely.
Additionally, the UOC had earlier reported the violent takeover of the Kazan Church in the city of Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia region, by supporters of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). Footage of the storming of the church’s fence using a bulldozer had been published.
