November 6, 2023The government of Ireland intends to take measures to end the privileges of free accommodation for Ukrainian refugees by the end of the year.
“We need to take measures that will slow down the influx of refugees,” Varadkar stated.
He emphasized that in this matter, Ireland should draw on the experiences of other countries that do not grant Ukrainians the right to indefinite free accommodation. It is also noted that the authorities plan to review the issue of benefits to encourage refugees to work rather than simply receiving state payments.
It is worth recalling that in early October, it was reported that Ireland was no longer able to voluntarily accept refugees. The country’s Prime Minister, Varadkar, even suggested that Ireland would provide financial assistance to other EU countries to help them deal with asylum seekers instead of voluntarily providing shelter to a larger number of people in Ireland.
It was already known in August that Ireland was facing another crisis regarding the resettlement of temporarily displaced individuals under temporary protection in the country. It was stated that in the coming months, new Ukrainian arrivals would not have the opportunity to find free accommodation from the Irish government.
