In Kyiv, the names of Moscow and Minsk were removed from the Alley of hero cities

In Kyiv, the names of Moscow, Minsk, and other Soviet cities, along with images of Soviet “Gold Star” medals, were removed from the Alley of Hero Cities located on the grounds of the Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II.

This was announced by the museum’s press service.

The museum described the removal as an “extremely important and symbolic step.”

“Along with the renovation of the museum space, a rethinking of one of the myths of the Soviet regime has taken place,” the museum’s statement, posted on social media, explained.

The press service clarified that the term “hero city” was introduced in the Soviet Union in 1965, but there were allegedly no clear criteria for determining which cities should receive the designation.

According to museum experts, “the recognition of cities was chaotic in nature and used solely for ideological purposes.”

It remains unclear whether the removed elements will be reinstated and in what form.
