14.03.2026 11:34In Ukraine’s Odesa region, a serviceman is suspected of stealing equipment intended for defense. He allegedly sold drones and other gear that was supposed to be used to protect the country’s southern region—some of it was pawned, and the rest sold at cut-rate prices.
Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI/DBR) reported this.
SBI investigators said they served a notice of suspicion to the head of the unit responsible for ensuring the operation of unmanned aerial systems at a military unit in Odesa region. According to the investigation, the official had access to a warehouse holding equipment intended for the defense needs of the southern region. The items included reconnaissance drones and equipment for countering enemy UAVs.
Law enforcement says the serviceman appropriated part of the equipment. Some drones and devices were taken to a pawnshop, while others were sold at a significantly lower price. Preliminary estimates put the damage to the state at more than 5.4 million hryvnias (about €106,000).
The suspect was detained and is accused of theft of military property through abuse of office under martial law. The article carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. A court has already ordered a preventive measure: detention with the option of bail set at 5.4 million hryvnias (€106,000).
The report also notes that detentions of military personnel for various crimes have been occurring relatively often. For example, law enforcement previously said a Defense Ministry employee illegally arranged jobs with reservation status for men during mobilization in exchange for a $10,000 bribe; the suspect was detained in September while receiving payment and may face up to two years in prison for acting as a intermediary in bribery.
It was also reported that an Air Force logistics commander was exposed for allegedly taking a bribe in exchange for assisting with the construction of aircraft shelters. According to investigators, the official demanded and received an unlawful benefit in violation of his duties; he was notified of suspicion, and the case was sent to court.
