In Romania, construction has begun on the largest NATO base in Europe, designed to accommodate 10,000 military personnel.

Experts believe that the construction of the North Atlantic Alliance base is related to the war in Ukraine, which could last several more years.

The facility is being built on an area of almost three thousand hectares in the Constanta County (Romanian port on the Black Sea), based on the already existing NATO airbase “Mihail Kogălniceanu”.

The project, costing 2.5 billion euros, includes runways, weapon platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.

“The base will become the most important permanent NATO military structure in close proximity to the conflict in southern Ukraine. Let’s not imagine that this conflict will end in 2025 or 2026, it’s a long-term conflict,” said Romanian expert Dorin Popescu.

It is worth noting that it was previously announced that in Bulgaria, by 2025, a military town will be built to accommodate a multinational NATO battle group. The construction cost will exceed 50 million euros.
