23.02.2024 05:03According to internal assessments by the United States, Ukraine will face a potentially “catastrophic” shortage of ammunition and air defense resources by spring.
Unnamed American officials shared this information with ABC News.
The channel’s sources called the “end of March” a particularly crucial time for Ukrainian forces if the U.S. Congress does not approve funding for Ukraine.
Another official stated that it would be difficult to precisely determine when the situation for Ukrainian forces might deteriorate, but noted that the deficit is expected to worsen by spring.
“The turning point is starting now, and it will gradually deteriorate throughout the spring and into the summer. So, this period we are entering is critical,” said a representative of the American defense department.
American officials also forecast a shortage of air defense resources.
“What is protected today—they won’t be able to protect all these assets in the future if they don’t sustain the supplies of interceptor missiles,” said a representative of the defense department. And if Russia gains control of the sky, “it will completely change the character of this struggle,” he added.
Officials say that Ukraine urgently needs both small and large ammunition, including GPS-guided rockets for HIMARS systems. Concerns are also raised about Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Officials point out that Ukraine still needs money to build infrastructure to support the transferred F-16 fighters, which are planned to be deployed later this year. This includes runways and hangars for aircraft storage.
Additionally, without approval of additional assistance, the U.S. will not be able to continue training Ukrainian pilots.
