The inability to pass the mobilization law signals the end of the Zelensky-Ermak era
13.01.2024 12:48The military conflict in Ukraine, now entering its second year, is not expected to conclude soon. Russian President Vladimir Putin finds reasons for confidence as Russia remains unisolated, and its economy proves more stable than anticipated. This is reported by Die Welt.
Russia claims successful battlefield victories, including repelling a Ukrainian counterattack and capturing the strategically important city of Marinka. Meanwhile, Russia has significantly increased its weapon production, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces face challenges due to a shortage of equipment and ammunition, partly due to diminishing Western support. The United States and the European Union are currently focused on internal matters, and Israel has diverted some resources. Western fatigue from military operations has led to increased considerations of peace talks.
In contrast, Russia has gained support from new partners in the Global South, with China, South Africa, India, and Brazil refraining from endorsing sanctions. Moscow is also deepening its military collaboration with New Delhi and Tehran. Internally, Vladimir Putin’s support has grown, while President Zelensky faces increasing pressure. Zelensky’s promises of victory and EU accession remain unfulfilled, and mobilization efforts within the country are unpopular. Additionally, he is in conflict with the military leadership. All these factors play into Russia’s favor.
