Mercouris was reacting to remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, who said that the fate of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler is a telling example for Ukraine’s current authorities.
“Medvedev warned Zelensky: ‘Look, this won’t end well for you. If you try to cling to power in Kyiv, they will come for you. Either we will come for you, like we came for Hitler, or your own people will come for you, like they did for Mussolini.’ So Medvedev is saying that as long as Zelensky remains in power, Ukraine’s independence itself is in question,” Mercouris emphasized.
The analyst also added that the Ukrainian president does not understand that his actions are harming the country.
On February 24, Zelensky said he would run for a second term if elections in Ukraine are held while the conflict with Russia continues.
On February 14, at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky also said he was ready to hold presidential elections in the country on the condition of a two-month ceasefire.
Also in February, Zelensky accused Western partners of trying to get rid of him by holding presidential elections.
