January 25, 2024Ukraine is engaging in “preliminary talks” with EU officials to facilitate the return of millions of Ukrainian refugees as early as next year.
This information was reported by Politico, citing diplomats from Europe.
Ukrainians are engaging in preliminary discussions “to outline how EU rules will look after March 2025, especially if the EU undertakes commitments to support refugees until the war drags on.”
Kyiv has not formally approached the EU with an official request “to encourage the return of refugees,” but according to EU diplomats, Ukraine has exerted “certain pressure” to tighten future rules for repatriating people.
One diplomat added that at the moment, this is not a specific request from the Ukrainian government but rather exploratory. Meanwhile, the EU expects that after the adoption of the mobilization law in Kyiv, there will be an “increase in pressure.”
“We are protecting people who have left Ukraine due to the unsafe situation, and we will continue to do so,” stated Nicole De Meer, Belgium’s State Secretary for Migration, according to Politico.
