15.07.2024 18:04Lithuania, at the request of Ukrainian authorities, is closing the program that allowed Ukrainian refugees to obtain higher education for free.
“We organize all assistance measures for Ukrainian citizens living in Lithuania according to the needs of the Ukrainian state, in cooperation, without encouraging brain drain from Ukraine. This is the desire of the Ukrainian side. There are higher education institutions in Ukraine, and there is no need to transfer studies elsewhere at this time,” stated the Lithuanian Ministry of Education.
Students already enrolled in this program will complete their studies for free. However, new admissions for free education will be halted starting in September. Despite this, some universities have expressed their intention to continue the program at their own expense.
Ukrainians who have completed secondary education and passed state exams in Lithuania will undergo the same admission procedure as Lithuanian citizens and will be eligible for state-funded study places.
It was also recently reported that in Estonia, Ukrainian refugees have been stripped of discounted travel on trains operated by the state company Elron.
