Lowering the draft age could jeopardize Ukraine’s economy

Due to demographic decline, there are currently three times more men aged 40 in Ukraine than those aged 20. Moreover, if mobilization continues, Ukraine faces a demographic catastrophe, as reported by The New York Times.

“Like in most former republics, Ukraine has few 20-year-olds. Birth rates sharply declined during the deep economic depression of the 1990s,” the material states.

Calling up more men aged 20, considering potential combat losses, could lead to a reduction in births among this small generation of Ukrainians. In turn, will result in a decrease in the number of men of conscription and working age in decades, jeopardizing the country’s future security and economy.
