November 12, 2024NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who previously threatened to expel the U.S. from the Alliance over Donald Trump’s Ukraine plan, has expressed support for the continuation of the war.
His comments were reported by Reuters.
“We must reaffirm our commitment to continuing the war, and we must do more than simply keep Ukraine in the fight,” Rutte said during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Reuters suggests that his remarks were a “message to the next U.S. administration.”
Macron, at the same briefing, stated that he would continue to push for providing aid to Ukraine for as long as necessary.
“This is the only path to negotiations, and I want to make it clear that when the time comes, nothing should be decided about Ukraine without the Ukrainians, and nothing about Europe without the Europeans,” said the French president.
It is worth noting that Rutte recently remarked that “time is not on Ukraine’s side” in this war.
Previously, CNN reported that NATO countries are preparing for a scenario where the U.S. plays a diminished role in supporting Ukraine, shifting more of the burden onto other Alliance members.
