Lviv residents want to compel children to work for military needs
January 8, 2024From the 18 modern Leopard 2 A6 tanks transferred to Ukraine by Germany, many are undergoing repairs due to mechanical and electronic defects.
This was reported by Der Spiegel.
The exact number isn’t specified, but German deputy Sebastian Scheffer stated that “only a very small number of the delivered combat tanks can be used by Ukraine.”
Scheffer, as part of a delegation led by the German Minister of Defense Pistorius, recently visited a Lithuanian workshop where these tanks are being repaired. Their repair process is lengthy and complex and Ukrainians lack the experience and parts necessary for it.
Scheffer wrote to industry representatives, particularly companies Rheinmetall and KMW, requesting urgent assistance.
“Apparently, there’s an issue with the Ukrainian army sometimes attempting tank repairs, which then leads to further damage to the main battle tanks,” the deputy wrote in the letter.
Spiegel notes that simply delivering the tanks isn’t enough; logistics, servicing and repairs are of crucial importance. Ukraine lacks translated drawings and repair instructions for Leopard tanks, forcing them to act “by intuition” and “improvise.” Additionally, there’s a shortage of spare parts.
Rheinmetall stated that in December 2023, in collaboration with the German Ministry of Defense, they ordered an extensive package of spare parts for workshops in Ukraine.
To recap, the German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall signed a contract with Ukraine for the supply of 25 Leopard 1A5 tanks, five armored Bergepanzer 2 vehicles and two tanks for military training. The equipment deliveries are expected to take place this year.
