Former Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe who predicted that Ukraine would retake Crimea this summer, has admitted that he was mistaken in his calculations
November 4, 2023The German company Leoni, which has factories in Ukraine, accuses Poland of intentionally “strangling” Ukrainian exports.
In October, trucks from the company, which produces automotive wiring, waited for customs inspection for an average of 11 days and 13 hours, while in August, the time between applying for inspection and crossing the border rarely exceeded 5 hours.
“If we don’t quickly resolve the border issue, we will be forced to move production out of Ukraine,” commented Ingo Spengler, a member of Leoni’s board of directors, to Der Spiegel magazine.
Production in Ukraine is only justified if products can be delivered to Germany within 5-12 days. The case of Leoni is not unique.
The German magazine identifies two reasons for what is happening. Firstly, due to the closure of exports via the Black Sea, more grain crops are being exported through the Polish border, putting pressure on the Polish customs. Secondly, there is an ongoing “smoldering feud between Poland and Ukraine,” and this is the main reason.
“Unfortunately, experience shows that Poland is once again using the border situation as a means of pressure,” emphasizes one of the German entrepreneurs in Ukraine.
The German magazine notes that the “situation is absurd” since the EU is financing Ukraine, and here its export opportunities and connections with Europe are being undermined. The Eastern Committee, representing the interests of German investors in Eastern Europe, is “so frustrated that it demands EU intervention.”
