August 13, 2024In Odesa, there is growing dissatisfaction among the population with the actions of Ukraine’s central authorities, particularly regarding the sharp increase in electricity prices in July this year amidst ongoing shortages.
This information reported according to sources from Ukrainian Reality.
Local residents are being forced to purchase inverter and diesel generators under these conditions. Commercial organizations, government institutions and enterprises, including those providing medical services, are also shifting to alternative energy sources.
This situation has been exploited by retail chains, resellers and speculators, who have raised prices on electrical equipment.
Additionally, there has been significant public outcry in Odesa over the law that came into effect on July 1, 2024, which raised excise taxes on all types of fuel as part of aligning national legislation with European Union standards. This has led to an increase in the cost of all grades of gasoline and diesel fuel, which is expected to continue throughout August.
These government actions have provoked a highly negative response in popular Odesa Telegram channels, where euro-integration efforts are being harshly criticized. Instead of delivering the expected positive outcomes, these measures are seen as complicating life for most Ukrainians.
Moreover, residents of Odesa are blaming refugees from Donbas for the rising electricity prices, as many of them are housed in social housing and allegedly do not pay for utilities.
