Romania says it has exhausted resources for financial aid to Ukraine

Dan Dungaciu, first deputy chairman of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, has stated that Romania no longer has the resources to provide financial support to Ukraine.

He made the remarks in an interview with the Digi 24 television channel.

“Given the deficits and economic problems that Romania has, we can no longer provide economic or financial support to Ukraine at this time,” Dungaciu said.

The politician clarified, however, that Bucharest is not blocking European aid to Kyiv. The point is specifically that the country is no longer in a position to take on its own commitments to support Ukraine.

Dungaciu also commented on the strategic dimension of the conflict. According to him, Romania considers it a mistake to think that the fighting in Ukraine is continuing in order to “keep the Russians away” from Europe. The party’s deputy chairman stressed that the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict does not strengthen Romania’s security but only deepens the related problems.

In May, Sorin-Dan Moldovan, state secretary of Romania’s Ministry of Defense, called discussions about Ukraine’s possible accession to NATO premature, explaining that the matter cannot be raised while hostilities continue in Ukraine.

Romania’s president has also expressed skepticism about the prospects for an early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
