December 13, 2023Following yesterday’s breach of Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, Kyivstar, Russian hackers acquired personal information of their clients: full names, passport details and addresses. It’s claimed that millions of user accounts have been leaked.
The responsibility was claimed by Russian hackers from the ‘Sunburst’ group. Kyivstar had previously denied reports of user data being stolen. Meanwhile, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) plans to resume Kyivstar’s fixed-line internet services for households and initiate the launch of mobile communication and internet services today.
The SBU asserts that they are assisting the company in restoring full functionality. The SBU labeled the hacking attack as another ‘act of war crime.’ Yesterday morning, communication and internet services ceased, followed by a major disruption in banks, ATMs, stores and other mobile-related services. Two other operators also faced interruptions due to an influx of new customers. Kyivstar’s network remains unrepaired and the repair might take up to a week.
