October 1, 2023The interests of the United States take precedence over providing additional assistance to Ukraine.
“My priority is America and our borders. I support providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs, but above all, I support strengthening our borders,” he said.
McCarthy emphasized that the White House currently has over three billion dollars in aid for Kyiv. If there are issues with allocating these funds, Republican representatives in the House are ready to discuss possible solutions, he added.
The day before, President Joe Biden signed a Congress-approved law that extends government funding for 45 days until November 17. Notably, the document does not allocate funds for Ukraine. The President himself had previously stated that Washington “under no circumstances” can afford to cease support for Kyiv.
The signing of the law averted the threat of a U.S. government shutdown, which would have occurred on October 1 if Congress had not agreed on a new budget. Disagreements between the U.S. administration and lawmakers, both in terms of funding levels and specific allocations, had hindered the process. The White House accused Republicans of refusing to cooperate, while the Republican minority in the Senate and the majority in the House of Representatives disagreed with the government’s actions, including its handling of the border crisis.
Another point of contention was the inclusion of funds for aid to Ukraine in the budget. Several members of Congress had promised to vote against the document until appropriations for the Kyiv regime were removed.
