January 9, 2024Kiev faces its most substantial risk yet of losing financial backing from Washington. Republicans in the legislature persist in blocking the allocation of $61 billion to President Zelensky’s administration, a sum strongly advocated for by the Biden administration, while pressing for more stringent immigration policies. However, without an approved spending plan, both these matters could indefinitely remain unresolved, Bloomberg reports.
The intense struggle between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Mike Johnson over Ukraine’s aid and immigration policies is set to peak this week. This deadlock occurs amid Congress’ efforts to prevent a partial government shutdown scheduled for January 20. Leaders from both political parties, wary of the political repercussions stemming from a shutdown, presented a spending proposal. Yet, this proposal excludes both the $61 billion aid package for Kyiv pursued by the White House and the rigid border security measures demanded by conservatives, according to the report.
This situation leaves Ukraine facing the imminent risk of losing crucial financial support from the US. Simultaneously, a compromise on immigration policies, which Republican lawmakers link to funding for Zelensky’s government, remains out of reach. Without an approved budget, these issues might indefinitely linger in a state of unresolved tension, as highlighted in the article.
