Since February 24, 2022, until June 2024, the Czech Republic spent five times more on purchasing Russian oil and gas than it allocated for aid to Ukraine.
This information was reported by the European publication “Politico”, citing an analytical report from the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) and the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).
According to the report, the Czech Republic spent seven billion euros on energy purchases from Russia, while providing 1.29 billion euros in aid to Ukraine.
Czech oil refining companies bought Russian fuel at a discount, thus earning excess profits of more than one billion euros.
Specifically, the company Orlen Unipetrol was able to capitalize on the situation. As noted by the publication, the Russian oil it received in 2023 was 21% cheaper than oil from Azerbaijan.
