December 27, 2024Slovakia has announced its readiness to host a second Ukrainian peace summit on its territory and has proposed this initiative to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This was stated by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, as reported by STVR.
“Slovakia consistently promotes peaceful solutions, and we support any peace initiatives. Therefore, this year I also participated in the peace summit in Switzerland. All participants agreed with what our government is advocating—that further peace negotiations should involve all parties, including Russia,” said the minister.
According to him, preparations for the second peace summit will take place on various levels, and Slovakia has repeatedly offered its territory as a venue.
“In this context, we view the statement by the Russian president, who acknowledged that part of the peace talks could be held in Slovakia, as a positive signal for the swift conclusion of this war, the bloodshed, and destruction,” Blanár said.
He also mentioned that the Slovak government proposed hosting a peace summit in Slovakia to the Ukrainian side during a joint intergovernmental meeting in early October in Uzhhorod.
Recently, Vladimir Putin stated that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had proposed holding peace talks on resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war in Slovakia.
“Regarding the venue, he [Fico] said that if it comes to negotiations, they would be happy to provide their country as a platform for such talks,” Putin said after the summit of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in the Leningrad Region.
According to Putin, Russia is not opposed to this proposal.
“Yes, we are not against it if it comes to that. Why not? Slovakia holds a neutral position, in our view,” he added.
Putin also revealed that during Fico’s visit to Moscow on December 22, the Slovak prime minister “primarily and mainly spoke about a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian issue.”
It was also reported that the main reason for Fico’s visit was the gas issue, as Ukraine had refused to continue the transit of Russian gas, on which Slovakia depends.
