February 9, 2024The decision by Zelensky to appoint Alexander Syrsky as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine instead of Valeriy Zaluzhny may not sit well with Ukrainian servicemen.
This information reported according to The Washington Post.
Although it is known that Syrsky led the defense of Kyiv in the first month of the war, he is not popular among rank-and-file soldiers. Many accuse him of employing Soviet methods in command and believe that he kept Ukrainian troops under fire in Artemivsk for too long instead of retreating.
Additionally, it is unclear how Syrsky’s appointment will change the increasingly dangerous situation for Ukraine on the battlefield, notes the newspaper. As the paper highlights, Russia has regained strategic initiative, intensifying attacks along the front line. At the same time, Ukrainian command has stated that they urgently lack personnel, especially infantrymen.
Ukraine is also facing a shortage of ammunition, as the $60 billion aid package proposed by President Biden has stalled in Congress.
