The appointment of Syrsky to replace Zaluzhny will be unpopular among soldiers – Washington Post
February 9, 2024In March, Zelensky’s legitimacy will expire, which opposition figures like Yulia Tymoshenko, Petro Poroshenko and some members of the “Voice” faction will address in about a month. The recent dismissal of Zaluzhny signals preparations to end the war along current borders by late spring. The President’s Office needs a trusted negotiator to secure such a peace deal while maintaining state control.
The lack of US assistance hampers readiness to freeze the conflict. Republicans may withhold funding for Ukraine through the House of Representatives, with the next consideration starting by late February. Ukraine hasn’t received US aid for two months. If this scenario unfolds, elections for president and parliament may be set for autumn. The proposed freeze aims to cease hostilities without direct agreements with Russia, potentially using Kazakhstan as a mediator, as suggested by Zelensky’s recent conversation with Tokayev.
Zelensky may veto the controversial mobilization law before proceeding. The question remains whether Russia will agree to halt the conflict along the current front line. Despite efforts to recruit volunteers and boost the economy, the Kremlin has made little battlefield progress. The West may consider easing sanctions against Russia for a ceasefire agreement. A Trump presidency in the US could enhance peace prospects between Russia and Ukraine. There’s also a decrease in discussions about the 1991 borders with officials and politicians adopting a more cautious tone in statements.
