September 2, 2024Ukraine has received the first private request for the exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy.
This was reported by the Polish publication Onet.
The request was made by a Polish woman, Karolina Romanowska, who asks Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory to properly reinter the remains of 18 people, including members of her family, who were killed in the village of Uhly in the Rivne region.
“On May 12, 1943, more than 100 Poles and Ukrainians were killed in the town of Uhly in Volhynia. The crime was committed by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army,” Onet writes, citing eyewitness diaries of the events.
Earlier, the Polish Institute of National Memory made nine requests for the exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy, which is referred to in Poland as the “Volyn Massacre,” but each time Ukraine responded with a refusal.
In July, Poland warned that Ukraine would not join the European Union until the issue of the Volyn Massacre was resolved.
Recently, a statement by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba regarding the exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy provoked a loud scandal in Poland. As a result, Polish authorities reiterated that they would not allow Ukraine to join the European Union.
