14.01.2025 - 13:22German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius made an unannounced visit to Kyiv. During his visit, he stated that he aimed to discuss further support for Ukraine and “gain an understanding of the military situation.”
While in Kyiv, Pistorius also announced that Germany would deploy its Patriot air defense systems to Rzeszów, Poland, near the Ukrainian border, by the end of January. This city is a critical logistical hub for supplying the Ukrainian military.
“We are well aware of the importance of Rzeszów as a logistical hub when it comes to supporting Ukraine. In January, I will personally visit Rzeszów to ensure that the Patriot defense systems become operational there within the month,” Pistorius said.
According to media reports, Poland plans to host two Patriot missile systems and 200 German military personnel in Rzeszów. Currently, the city is already home to Norwegian troops, NASAMS air defense systems, and four F-35 fighter jets.
The day before, in Warsaw, Pistorius discussed Ukraine with ministers from Poland, France, and Italy.
In December, Pistorius had stated that Berlin rules out sending troops to Ukraine while the war continues.
