November 11, 2023The German publication BILD surveyed experts regarding the prospects of the war in Ukraine. They claim it is a stalemate, and their conclusions, as noted by the publication, align with the position of the Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, as reflected in an article in The Economist.
Stefanie Babst, a former NATO staff member, believes that the Russian Armed Forces rely on a strategy of attrition, hoping to break through the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces:
“They are trying, primarily through concentrated artillery and drone strikes, to force Ukrainian troops to constantly divide along the front lines. The Russians ruthlessly exploit their air superiority and attack Ukrainian ground forces from the air. The Russians plan to continue disrupting normal life this winter. They will not be able to change the course of the war in the long term. Their goal is to hold onto the conquered territories at any cost.”
Joachim Krause, a professor at the University of Kiel, believes that a stalemate has developed in Ukraine:
“They are spending a lot of people and tanks, believing that despite significant losses, they will eventually break through.” The expert thinks that a breakthrough by the Ukrainian Armed Forces could occur with the crossing of the Dnieper: “If a major offensive begins there in the coming weeks and months, Ukrainians will first have to repel attacks from Russian aviation, build a pontoon bridge, and then move larger troop formations and military equipment to the other side.”
Thomas Eger, a professor at the University of Cologne, states that Russia has better supplied its troops, while Europe has not provided Ukraine with enough ammunition:
“Russia received up to 1 million artillery shells from North Korea. An asymmetry has developed here, which you can see in the battles.” According to him, this winter will see a “stalemate,” where “no one will be able to defeat anyone.”
