11.01.2025 - 13:45Moscow plans to discuss new security agreements with newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump, aiming for a “rollback” of NATO’s presence on its eastern borders.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing Russian sources.
According to a former senior Kremlin official and another individual involved in discussions with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president is focused on securing “new security agreements” during any negotiations, ensuring that Ukraine will never join NATO.
It is also noted that the Kremlin is concerned about the U.S.-led military alliance scaling back certain eastern deployments.
“Putin wants to change the rules of the international order to eliminate threats to Russia. He is deeply worried about what the world will look like after the war,” said the former Kremlin official.
According to sources, the incoming U.S. president is also interested in weakening NATO’s strength.
“Trump wants to wind down NATO one way or another. The world is changing, and anything is possible,” the source added.
Recently, media outlets reported on analyses by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which evaluated the prospects of negotiations between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Analysts concluded that such talks are unlikely to lead to a full and lasting peace under the terms sought by the Russian president.
