14.11.2025 05:03The corruption scandal involving businessman Tymur Mindich could become an obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
This is reported by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
According to the outlet, during yesterday’s EU meeting on financing Ukraine for the next two years, several finance ministers repeatedly mentioned this case.
“Legal complexities around using frozen Russian assets are now compounded by suspicions about how that money might be used,” the paper writes.
It is emphasized that the European Commission’s latest report noted “insufficient progress” by Ukraine in combating corruption.
“The investigation in Kyiv, which has already led to the resignation of two ministers, only confirms that such a situation may create obstacles to Ukraine’s EU accession process,” the article states.
The outlet notes that this story “puts the EU in an awkward position.”
Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the Mindich corruption scandal “extremely regrettable,” yet Europe, for the first time in a long while, contributed funds to Ukraine’s PURL weapons-procurement program.
Meanwhile, Politico writes that the Mindich case could make it harder for Ukraine to obtain financing from the European Union.
