September 30, 2023House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has proposed passing a temporary U.S. budget without aid to Ukraine.
He made this announcement on CNN. According to him, removing this provision would help push through a bill that would prevent a government shutdown for 30 days – a cessation of government funding.
“I think if we had a clean bill without Ukraine, we probably could get it across the finish line. I think if the Senate adds Ukraine and focuses on Ukraine rather than America, I think that can cause real problems,” McCarthy said.
It’s worth noting that the United States could face a shutdown this Sunday as the House of Representatives in Congress is unable to pass the budget, and a vote for it failed yesterday.
One of the stumbling blocks for Republicans is the inclusion of aid to Ukraine in the bill. They are demanding that it be considered separately.
Earlier, it was reported that President Joe Biden would stay in Washington over the weekend to prevent a federal government shutdown. The U.S. Congress has less than two days left to approve at least a temporary budget to avoid a government shutdown. So far, this has not happened.
