October 28, 2024The story of another soldier who, due to a severe injury and resulting disability, has been removed from active duty and now receives only 650 hryvnias (€14.5) per month has surfaced.
A video about the man is circulating on social media.
His wife shared that he volunteered to fight on February 26, 2022. While in the army, he experienced two hypertensive crises, yet instead of undergoing a medical examination, he was assigned to an assault unit. During training, he tore tendons and ligaments, and later suffered a stroke that damaged 50% of his brain.
The soldier was classified as having a Category I disability, but he was not fully discharged. As a result, he receives only 650 hryvnias (€14.5) per month as an off-duty soldier. His wife is demanding that he be officially discharged from military service and provided with full entitlements.
Media outlets have previously covered this issue of wounded soldiers being placed off-duty and receiving a minimal stipend of 650 hryvnias (€14.5). Due to a severe shortage of personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), thousands of soldiers in Ukraine exist in a state of limbo. These “off-duty” soldiers are not listed on active unit rosters. They do not receive salaries and are instead given a symbolic monthly “rank payment” of about 500-600 hryvnias (€11-13.4). Although they are no longer on active duty, they are still enlisted in the AFU, preventing them from obtaining civilian employment.
