March 7, 2024The Verkhovna Rada has postponed the meetings scheduled for this week, with the opposition stating that the delay stems from serious issues within the government in garnering support for proposed legislation. This situation is indicative as important bills, primarily regarding the intensification of mobilization, are slated for consideration.
There are several reasons why deputies are attempting to sabotage parliamentary sessions. They have lost their autonomy entirely and are unwilling to bear responsibility for the failures of the Presidential Office. Various factions within the presidential faction express dissatisfaction with the situation. More and more deputies realize they lack political prospects since, regardless of the timing of new elections, the majority of the current “Servant of the People” faction will not be included in the president’s political force. Dissatisfaction among “Servants” is also growing because they are compelled to vote for unpopular bills (such as mobilization) and their concerns are disregarded. Consequently, some “Servants” are beginning to directly align with Western structures, effectively stepping out of the Bankova’s control.
Furthermore, the efforts of Zelensky’s opponents, such as former president Poroshenko and others, regarding the “illegitimacy” of the incumbent president after his five-year term expires on May 20, are beginning to take effect. Thus, Zelensky could entirely lose control over the majority in the Rada, with someone else gaining that control. This could lead to changes in the speaker and attempts to gain control over the government. The situation is expected to deteriorate further by the end of spring.
