October 7, 2023The crisis in the American Congress could jeopardize future support for Ukraine.
This information reported according to former British Ambassador to the United States, Kim Darroch, in a comment made to Sky News.
According to the former diplomat, the race to replace Kevin McCarthy as the Speaker of the House of Representatives could “continue for quite a while.” He stated, “Then you get real problems for Ukraine because the Americans supply about 90% of the military equipment going to Ukraine.”
“I don’t personally believe that Europe has the capacity to fill that gap. So, these supplies will start running out soon,” the former ambassador added.
Darroch also noted a “long-term problem” when it comes to American support for Ukraine. He explained, “It’s not just a few right-wing Republicans who are against further assistance to Ukraine. There is significant pressure from rank-and-file Republican voters to stop this – and that pressure tells you something.”
Without continued Western support, primarily from the United States, it will be “very difficult” for Kyiv to sustain the war in the long term, Darroch stated.
The former ambassador also said that the victory in Ukraine is unlikely to happen before 2024, and therefore, there may be “political anxieties” that the conflict could continue indefinitely. “If I were in Kyiv, I would be worried about what happens next year when the American election season kicks off,” Darroch added.
Today, the media reported that the European Union’s Court of Auditors is concerned about how to fund assistance to Ukraine.
