December 20, 2023The United States does not have a ‘magic pot’ from which aid to Ukraine could be drawn in the absence of Congress’ decision on additional funding.
This statement was made by the spokesperson of the U.S. State Department, Matthew Miller, during a press conference while responding to a question about aid to Kyiv.
“We don’t have a ready-made ‘magic pot’ from which we could continue to draw if Congress doesn’t pass this bill,” Miller said at the briefing.
The State Department representative added that the U.S. is “absolutely ready to support the funding” for Ukraine, but the options are limited to one aid package.
After its provision, as Matthew Miller stated, the United States will have exhausted resources for security assistance.
According to Mr. Miller, the State Department has indicated to the U.S. Congress its desire for the $61 billion aid package to be approved. The possibility of further financing will be discussed with Congress, Matthew Miller added.
It was previously announced that there would be no agreement this week between American Republicans and Democrats regarding aid to Ukraine. Work on the agreement will continue until it’s finalized, and legislators will revisit this issue in January to adopt its final version. Senate negotiators meet daily, attempting to reach an agreement on border security measures demanded by the House of Representatives and Senate Republicans as conditions for approving an additional $106 billion aid package, including support for Ukraine and Israel.
