The uncertainty in the West regarding Ukraine plays into Russia’s hands – Bloomberg
April 17, 2024The vote on aid to Ukraine in the US House of Representatives may not take place this week as planned, according to Republicans.
This information reported by the Associated Press.
The agency notes that the text of the aid bills, including for Ukraine, has not yet been finalized and based on ongoing consultations, it has not been agreed upon yet.
“Some predicted that Speaker Mike Johnson would not be able to hold a vote on the package this week as planned,” AP writes.
Some Republicans “were furious” that Johnson was willing to vote on aid to Ukraine separately from the issue of the Mexican border.
For example, Representative Thomas Massie publicly called for the speaker to resign.
Johnson stated that lawmakers face a “dual choice”: to vote on his bill with aid to Ukraine separately, or Democrats will try to push through their Senate-approved bill on allocating money to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the border, which “would leave behind additional Republican priorities.”
However, Johnson later received support from six Republican committee chairs in the House of Representatives, who backed his plan to divide the issues of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan into several bills.
