13.06.2025 - 13:46The Council of the European Union has unanimously supported the extension of the temporary protection program for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2027.
This was announced on the official website of the Council.
“Today, the Council expressed unanimous support for the proposal to extend temporary protection for more than 4 million Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression until March 4, 2027,” the statement reads.
At the same time, Poland initiated a discussion on a strategy for the gradual phase-out of temporary protection once a just peace is achieved.
“In the near future, we will work on common EU-wide solutions in this area, including in the context of return to Ukraine,” said Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak.
Since March 2022, the EU has provided safety and asylum to over 4 million Ukrainian refugees under the Temporary Protection Directive. The protection was previously set to expire on March 4, 2026, but it will now be extended by an additional year, until March 4, 2027.
