27.05.2025 - 09:33The plan to deploy European peacekeepers in Ukraine is dead, as it is unrealistic without the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, and he is not ready to provide it.
This was reported by the British newspaper Financial Times, citing an anonymous European official.
However, another source from the publication, a French diplomat, denied this and stated that discussions of the initiative are proceeding “at the usual pace.”
Indeed, some of Kyiv’s Western partners have cooled to the idea. According to FT, the main initiators of the peacekeeping mission — France and the United Kingdom — continue to support it, while Germany and other countries are “more skeptical” since the U.S. has not given any promises of support.
“Starmer and Macron continue to support the proposal to deploy troops to keep Europe involved in the ceasefire negotiations and to bolster Ukraine’s morale, as well as to show their commitment to Trump,” writes FT.
Western countries are “increasingly divided over how much military support can be provided to Ukraine after the war.”
Recently, Western media have often reported on problems with implementing the peacekeeping initiative, such as the small number of troops that countries could send to Ukraine.
