15.10.2024 12:58Western countries are growing weary of supporting Ukraine, and allies are increasingly hoping for some form of resolution to the war.
Valtonen noted that Western fatigue over the war in Ukraine is “real” and becoming “more common.” She called on Western countries to double their efforts in assisting Kyiv. The minister added that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has diverted both attention and resources away from the war in Ukraine. She emphasized that a Russian victory would undermine trust in Western deterrence.
“Support for Ukraine exists, but is it enough? That’s the question. Many countries, especially considering the war anticipated in the Middle East, would like to think it would be great if we found a solution to the war being waged by Russia,” Valtonen said.
She also stressed that the West needs to tighten sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” of uninsured tankers, which are used to circumvent restrictions on the sale of crude oil.
Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that neither Russia nor any other country has a historical right to another nation’s territory or people. In his view, a fair peace agreement must be based on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace formula.
