October 17, 2023Thousands of Ukrainians in the UK are at risk of being left without a roof over their heads.
This is reported by The Guardian.
The funding and sponsorship support for more than 130,000 individuals who have received assistance under the “Homes for Ukraine” program, totaling £2.1 billion, is set to expire in March of next year. After the conclusion of this program, many Ukrainians are at risk of becoming homeless.
“As more and more sponsorship agreements come to an end, the risk of homelessness is likely to increase,” states a document from the National Audit Office.
Since the launch of this program in the spring of 2022, almost 74,000 British households have applied to host Ukrainian families. Britons who accommodated Ukrainians received payments of £350 per month in the first year and £500 per month in the second year. However, these payments end a year before the expiration of the three-year visas issued to Ukrainians under this program.
“If sponsors are unwilling to host Ukrainians without these payments, then participants in this program will need alternative housing solutions,” the document notes.
