The Rada saw Trump’s talk with Putin before Zelensky as a bad sign
13.02.2025 - 13:43U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had “excellent” negotiations with Russia and Ukraine yesterday. According to him, there is now a “good chance to end this terrible, very bloody war.”
He wrote this on his social media platform, Truth Social.
At the same time, Bloomberg reports that Trump’s administration “simply informed Zelensky as a fait accompli” about the negotiations to end the war.
“Even before President Volodymyr Zelensky arrives at the Munich Conference tomorrow to once again make his case to the U.S. about the need to protect Ukraine’s independence, it seems the fate of his country has already been decided. His worst fear—that the terms of a peace agreement would be determined without his participation—has begun to come true,” the publication states.
The negotiations between the U.S. and Russia are expected to take place “over the heads of Ukrainians and Europeans,” and they “will have to accept the outcome.”
Carlo Masala, a professor of international politics at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, called this an “apocalyptic scenario” in an interview with *Bild*.
“We are left with nothing. Just as we had no strategy for this war over the past three years, we now have no strategy for the period after it. This is bitter. It is a massive failure,” Masala stated.
Commenting on remarks by Fox News host Pete Hegseth regarding the 2014 borders, Masala suggested that Trump might pressure Putin to return some territories to Ukraine to present it as a success. However, he added that Putin would be “clapping his hands” at the prospect of the U.S. leaving the Ukraine issue entirely to Europe.
“Putin has won this war. He has managed to push the Americans out of the conflict. This is the best thing that could have happened to him. European security forces will not stop him from launching another attack on the rest of Ukraine in a few years,” Masala warned.
In his view, “Trump follows his own course—whether or not it is the best course for Ukraine or European security.”
It is worth noting that many in the West reacted extremely negatively to Trump’s call with Putin yesterday.
