22.04.2024 - 12:40In 2023, Ukraine demonstrated the largest increase in military spending relative to GDP in the world, by 11% (reaching 37%).
This was reported by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Overall, Ukraine’s military expenditures increased by 51%, reaching $64.8 billion. Consequently, Ukraine moved from the 11th place in military spending in 2022 to the 8th place in 2023.
Russia ranked second in terms of military spending relative to GDP, with an increase of 1.2% (reaching 5.9%).

Global military expenditures have been increasing for the ninth consecutive year. In 2023, they further increased by 6.8%, reaching $2.443 trillion, which corresponds to 2.3% of the global GDP. This marks the highest global level of military spending recorded by SIPRI. Researchers attribute this trend to wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as tensions in Asia.
About half of the world’s military spending last year was accounted for by the United States and China. All countries in the top 10 increased their military expenditures.
It is worth noting that the NATO Secretary General believes that Ukraine should address the issue of military shortages on its own, with allies providing assistance through weaponry.
