March 6, 2024Ukraine is ready to accept restrictions on its trade with the EU to defuse the dispute with Poland. But Europe must ban the import of Russian grain.
This was stated by Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy, to the Financial Times.
Kyiv supports the new measures proposed by Brussels, regarding restrictions on the import of eggs, poultry and sugar from June, and allowing individual countries to close their markets to Ukrainian grain, except for further transit to other countries.
At the same time, Kyiv calls on the EU to ban the import of Russian grain.
“Perhaps for a transitional period of this kind. A managed approach to trade flows between Ukraine and the EU is what we all need. As for wheat, it’s not Ukraine that creates problems for Polish farmers, but Russia,” Kachka said.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has agreed on the need to ban the import of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus.
“However, achieving a ban at the EU level will be difficult, as some member states oppose such a step due to concerns that it will destabilize global markets and worsen the economic and social crisis in developing countries,” FT writes.
Russian grain exports to the EU increased by more than 50% to 1.5 million tons from 2022 to 2023.
Earlier, it was reported that Polish protesters were blocking all six directions at the Ukrainian border.
