March 6, 2024Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Herman Halushchenko, has ruled out any commercial agreements allowing the continued transportation of Russian natural gas through Ukraine after the expiration of the current transit agreement at the end of the year. Bloomberg reported this.
“I do not see such a possibility. There are no possible solutions on the table. We are ready to stop this. If someone said that this is a critical issue for survival in winter, that it is a question of supply reliability, that is one situation. But I do not see such a situation,” said Halushchenko.
Instead of purchasing Russian gas, Halushchenko called for more European countries to store fuel in Ukrainian reservoirs. Ukraine can store more gas (15 billion cubic meters) than it transited last year (14 billion cubic meters). Earlier, Prime Minister Shmyhal stated readiness to extend the transit of Russian gas after the contract with Gazprom expires at the end of 2024, but only through an intermediary from the EU. Several European countries may be interested in this, such as Italy, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.
