24.12.2024 - 18:49Ukraine plans to remove Russian and Belarusian from the list of languages protected under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
This was announced in a post on the Telegram channel of Taras Melnychuk, the representative of the Cabinet of Ministers in the Verkhovna Rada.
He stated that the updated list of protected languages will include Bulgarian, Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, Modern Greek, German, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Hungarian, Czech, and Hebrew. Russian, Belarusian, and Moldovan (officially referred to as Romanian by Chișinău in 2023) will be excluded from the list. Greek will be replaced with Modern Greek, and Yiddish will be replaced with Hebrew.
Additionally, the Cabinet intends to replace the term “minority languages” with “minoritarian languages.”
It is worth recalling that Article 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine states that Ukrainian is the state language, but “free development, use, and protection of Russian and other languages of Ukraine’s national minorities is guaranteed.”
Recently, Ukrainian media reported that Russian is no longer used on railway tickets, where English has taken its place.
