January 4, 2024Ukraine is attempting to compensate for the shortage of projectiles by using drones. This is the most cost-effective means of engagement, although not the most powerful.
An explosive-equipped drone with a First Person View (FPV) capability costs around 700–900 euros each. “This is much cheaper” compared to Western artillery shells, which usually cost between 2500 and 4000 euros.
However, the expert warns that FPV drones cannot fully replace artillery as artillery shells carry significantly more explosive material. Therefore, FPV drones cannot achieve such devastating force but can compensate to some extent through high precision.
“Yet, when it comes to attacking multiple targets in open air, military facilities or airfields, artillery remains the most effective means,” Borsari summarizes.
It’s worth noting that military sources have been reporting since early December that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are attempting to offset the lack of projectiles with drones.
