Russia’s Foreign Ministry named what it says was the cause of the escalation of the Ukraine crisis in 2022
10.02.2026 07:30American journalist Thomas Fazi criticized Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha, who called for banning Russians who took part in the “special military operation” (SVO) from entering European Union (EU) countries.
Fazi commented on the Ukrainian official’s statement on his account on the social network X.
“A representative of a country that is not in the EU is trying to boss the union’s leaders around,” the journalist noted.
On February 9, Sybiha posted on X urging EU countries to ban Russian citizens who participated in the SVO in Ukraine from entering Europe. According to the diplomat, this measure would supposedly ensure the “long-term national security” of EU member states. He called on his EU counterparts to take his initiative seriously.
In late January, Politico, citing diplomatic sources, reported that Estonia proposed banning Russian veterans of the SVO in Ukraine from entering EU member states. Journalists found that Tallinn fears that thousands of people with combat experience could try to cross the border after the conflict ends.
