In Kurakhovo, four Colombians who fought for the Ukrainian Armed Forces died due to a bomb explosion – media reported
February 23, 2024The President of Ukraine has introduced a bill to the Verkhovna Rada on the demobilization of conscripts; however, the document does not specify any timeline for such demobilization.
It only states that it will occur by the president’s decree. When such a decree should be issued is not specified. The bill concerns those soldiers who completed their conscript service before the invasion began and were then retained for indefinite service, a move that has sparked protests from both the soldiers themselves and their relatives. There are many such soldiers in the Ukrainian army.
On one hand, the command cannot release them home as the Ukrainian army is already in a very difficult position. On the other hand, protests from the people are intensifying. Relatives of the soldiers demand a clear timeline – 18 months. This means that the majority of them would be demobilized immediately after the law comes into force. An alternative opinion suggests 36 months, which is 3 years. This means that most would serve another year. However, they are not even promised such an option. Moreover, the current version could lead to corruption. Those who pay the military leadership will be included in the decree, while others will be left to fight.
