December 20, 2023Ukraine will consider the possibility of introducing multiple citizenship for refugees currently living abroad.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this during a press conference.
“We need to consider multiple citizenship. I don’t see anything wrong with such proposals. I’ve spoken about multiple citizenship even before the full-scale war. I genuinely believe it’s normal. I think there are around 60 million Ukrainians worldwide. Not everyone necessarily has to live in Ukraine; they have their own history and families, some were born in Canada or the USA. But we should give them the opportunity to support Ukraine, help open businesses, pay taxes. All of this contributes positively to Ukraine. We shouldn’t overheat this issue, but it’s also too early to dismiss it,” he said.
In this context, Zelensky also urged those who have left abroad, especially women and children, “not to rush to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship.”
Recall that in winter 2020, Zelensky proposed simplifying citizenship issuance, including to Ukrainians living abroad with passports from other countries. De facto, he put forward the idea of legalizing dual citizenship, which contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine.
